Weekend tennis warriors set to raise a racquet
By Tim O’Connell

Budding and resurgent tennis stars of all abilities are encouraged to ‘come play’ at their local tennis club. New Zealand’s tennis season has already served up some summer highlights for fans of the popular sport. The twin marquee events of the ASB Classic and the Heineken Open brought quality fields to the country in January for the annual women’s and men’s tournaments. Meanwhile, the recently concluded Australian Open has showcased the world’s elite in the scorching Melbourne heat. Now, those inspired by the skills on display can take the first step to replicating their heroes’ feats during Tennis New Zealand’s ‘Come Play’ open days over Valentine’s Day weekend, February 14-15. Clubs around the region will throw their doors open to the community hoping to raise the profile and numbers playing tennis. The emphasis is on fun, with the slogan for the two days being ‘tennis- the ball with the built in smile’. Organised locally by Tennis Central, the open days have been promoted as a chance to fall in love with tennis all over again. A bumper turnout from youngsters as well as ‘revitalised’ racquet handlers is expected. Twelve Wellington Clubs from Karori to Wainuiomata will take part in the event, with balls, racquets and sunscreen provided to those attending, as well as food and activities for kids. Mini McEnroes and faded Federers in our area don’t have far to go to be part of the action. For people living in Petone and the surroundings suburbs, the western hills are the place to go at the Maungaraki Tennis Club on Barberry Grove.
