Hellos and goodbyes for local teachers

San Antonio School East is losing beloved teacher Amy Durant who is returning to her native town of Boston, USA. “She brings such enthusiasm and passion for teaching, and it’s really sad to see her go. “She knew how to engage with students in learning – young, bright eyes and the children adored her,” says Principal Jenny Stewart. Miss Durant taught pupil from year’s three to six and had a focus on science and social science. “We know she will keep in touch with us ... perhaps we can set up a blog for her,” says Mrs Stewart. San Antonio School East will perform a Christmas play with a special twist this year. With help from Ms Cushla Quigan of the Petone Sacred Heart Parish they have adapted the Christmas message to be told through the voices of native trees. Meanwhile at Wilford School in Petone a new classroom is in the works, because of a school role expected to grow to 330 pupils by the end of next year. To cater for demand two new teachers will start at the school next year. “One of the teachers has one year’s experience and the other is a new one. “There are so many things you look at with a new teacher; if they will fit into the school’s culture, curriculum knowledge, classroom management...” “We always pick the best person for the job,” says Principal Judy Grose. The school received funding from the Ministry of Education for the new classroom, which is currently in the process of being approved. Work is expected to start over the summer holidays, in preparation for next year. “There has been a gradual increase in the school role. “Hopefully the classroom will accommodate the growing role, and be large enough for next year,” says Mrs Grose. The school is also holding a leaving dinner for year eight students at Lone Star restaurant, and class trips are being organised for the end of the year. “There is so much happening,” she says.
